Long, long overdue guest post, written by my mom. I think this is a pretty excellent advertisement for the L&D travel package - please feel free to make reservations. Seriously, if you want to come to Hong Kong, we'd love to show you around. Just avoid any time between April and mid-October.
I never imagined that the first time I dipped my toes in the "pacific" ocean, I would be on the Asian side of the big blue...but last week Ron and I found ourselves in Hong Kong, visiting with Lindsay and Dave on Lamma Island. Yes, parents will fly half way around the world to see their children!
With Linds and Dave serving as personal tour guides we sampled a bit of everything; wet markets, tram rides, masses of people moving along the sidewalks, bubble tea, layers upon layers of sky scrapers, ferry rides (on modern ferries with nice wide, railed gangplanks and on few pitching vessels, where you leapt onto the front of the boat with your fingers crossed) and lots of walking, walking, walking!
But despite Hong Kong’s reputation as a crowded, bustling city, Linds and Dave made sure we saw the other side of the islands...small fishing villages, vegetable stands on every corner, beautiful white sand beaches, interesting wildlife, harrowing bus rides up twisting mountains (standing room only, with Ron up front), and scenic views in all directions.
The food was amazing! From our first meal in the city...fancy dim sum with the kid’s fellow teachers (Chopsticks 101) to local dim sum on the island, we ate our way through the week: ostrich steaks, Mediterranean salad, African chicken, calamari, pizza, congee, sea bream, clams, sashimi, and grilled chicken kabobs (Dave makes a yummy marinade)! For the cautious eater, there are plenty of McDonald’s, but why???
Of course, the best part of the visit was spending lots of time with Lindsay and Dave: hiking, playing euchre and hanging out on ferry rides. When your kids grow up to be enjoyable, fun adults, it’s hard to get enough of them! Thanks, Lindsay and Dave, for a wonderful week in Hong Kong!
